While You’re At It, Grow Sweet Peas

Next time you’re planting peas, do something lovely for yourself: plant sweet peas, too. Wispy, floral sweet pea vines thrive in pretty much the exact same conditions as regular peas, so once you know how to grow peas, you know how to grow sweet peas. They’re stunning as cut flowers, and oh, do they ever smell amazing! A few pictures for inspiration…

  • Top left: via bhg.com. When you’re arranging flowers like sweet peas in a wide-mouthed vase, you can use a floral frog to keep the blooms in place, or you can put a few marbles in the bottom of the container and nestle the stems between them for security.
  • Top right: via countryliving.com. A simple mix of sweet peas, nicotiana and bupleurum spill out of a striking blue-green cup. I love how unstudied it looks.
  • Bottom: via Rose Notes. All you need is some striking color contrast with your vase, and all of the sudden sweet peas looks as graphic and modern as they do romantic.

  • Bottom: via realsimple.com. For both these rose and sweet pea arrangements, a monochromatic color palette keeps the look simple and elegant rather than fussy. And that pale green vase in the top photo is such a nice gleam of color, right?

I planted some sweet pea seeds last week. Since it’s July and they’re a cool season flower, I bet they won’t even sprout. But they’re so beautiful I just had to give it a try! You’ll be the first to know if any seedlings peek through the soil…
