This Week in the Garden

Last week it was the peas that bloomed. This week it’s the beans. My little peach tree is getting bushier and bushier, my balloon flowers are ballooning, and I’ve got more strawberries on the way. And that’s not all! Pictures of all the fun after the jump. (more…)

Garden Reading: The Late Interiors

I have a book I think you’ll really like. It’s called (as may be obvious from the photo above) The Late Interiors, by Marjorie Sandor, and it’s a love story. About a man. But also about a home and a garden.

Sandor is the director of the creative writing MFA program at Oregon State University, where I went to school, which means she was my writing teacher. Which also means I feel weird calling her “Sandor,” so I’m just going to go ahead and call her Marjorie. If you read the book, you’ll want to call her Marjorie, too.

Mint and Tomato Inspired “Kelly” Bags from Hermés: Hands Off, I Saw Them First

Now that we know each other quite well, I can let you into a little secret. I have quite the thing for handbags, I’m talking, ahem, expensive handbags. You know the type I mean, swaddled in baby-bum soft leather, stitched by the hand of a 100-year-old seamstress who’s known nothing but the craft of handbag stitchery, and touched by the design prowess of…angels.  So you can imagine how it just made my day to come upon these delightfully artful, edible  handbag creations (N.B. not for actual usage) from Hermés to celebrate the launch of its very real wicker “picnic” Kelly bag.

Verdant and plush with mint, and other herbaceous wonders. Don’t you just love the radish sitting off-center, adding a touch of flaming pink? Quel magnifique!

This tomato- inspired creation is luscious enough to bite into. Two cigarette thin carrots, and a diminutive, but perfectly formed lettuce leaf are the ideal finishing touches. Vinaigrette anyone?

And here’s the real deal:

Introducing Spade & Spatula’s Video Series: A Mint Tasting and Refreshing Herbaceous Drinks

Today’s an exciting day for us at SS HQ. We’re unleashing our first videos on you. Evidently, the training wheels haven’t come off the video camera yet, but we’re secretly just a little bit pleased with the two short clips we put together celebrating the wonders of mint. The first video features a short tasting where we  talk you through the flavors, aromas and uses of 5 delicious varieties of homegrown mint. The second video is a step-by-step guide to making not one, but two tasty mint-infused drinks. Our take on the classic Mint Julep, and a Minty Watermelon Lemonade both use a tangy pineapple mint simple syrup as their base.

Stayed tuned for more, and let us know what you think!
